Knots

Project Summary

Six massive steel knots high in columns on a promenade in a newly erected commercial development in Zhengzhou, China. Knots in ancient China (among other places) were used to record history and information before the development of written characters. We thought it fun to juxtapose the old with the new, and the hard with the flexible.

Project Information

Six massive steel knots high in columns on a promenade in a newly erected commercial development in Zhengzhou, China. Knots in ancient China (among other places) were used to record history and information before the development of written characters. We thought it fun to juxtapose the old with the new, and the hard with the flexible. In our first proposal the knots were the same colour as the columns itself. We hoped some visitors would notice the knot and it would confuse them for a moment. On request of the client we added colourful patterns.
