OtherNetwork is a research project that aims to create a new type of cultural institution
connecting independent art spaces through a digital infrastructure. This network takes the form of a collaborative platform that illustrates the links between different spaces, artists and self-initiated art projects around the world.
The website is organised into three levels: Global, City, and Entry. Each level shows the visual connections among artists, spaces, and initiatives. Users can explore the platform by searching, filtering, or following these connections.
OtherNetwork adopts a model of data visualisation that escapes geographical references. Instead, the different networks are represented by plotting the links between the different players in the same network. In this way, some of the hierarchies and paradigms associated with cartography are bypassed to emphasise the fluidity of these interconnected artistic networks.
The platform was created as a non-extractive, participatory data visualisation tool that reflects the realities and autonomy of artist-run spaces. It’s a gradual and user-informed development that evolved through ongoing conversations with artists and cultural workers from cities like Accra, Lagos, and Bogotá.
It also hosts original content (essays, interviews, podcasts, and a traveling exhibition series) that act as relays, passing ideas and connections from one space to another. These contributions often follow a chain of invitations, where one participant invites the next, allowing the network to grow organically with each new contribution.
