This CD cover design for Leaves Black’s album, Flight Chamber, visualizes a narrative of a man who becomes a bird to observe others. The custom-lettered title, ‘飛行室’, is designed with an ambiguous form—resembling clouds or a map—and serves as a vessel for a collage of symbolic imagery.
The design for the album Flight Chamber by Busan-based band Leaves Black began with a single, evocative narrative: “There is a person who believes he has no story of his own. Out of curiosity about the lives of others, he becomes a bird and circles around them.” This short story became the conceptual foundation for the entire CD cover design.
The primary goal was to translate this poetic journey of observation into a single image. The focal point is the custom lettering for the title, ‘飛行室’ (Flight Chamber). The characters were drawn to possess an ambiguous, organic quality, suggesting the shifting forms of clouds, the winding lines of a map, or an undefined, abstract territory. This visual uncertainty mirrors the protagonist’s fluid, floating perspective as an observer.
Crucially, the letters themselves become the “chamber” of the title. We treated the letterforms as vessels, creating a collage of symbolic images within their boundaries. These fragmented pictures represent the disparate stories and moments of other lives that the observer-bird collects. The final design is a direct visual interpretation of the core narrative, inviting the viewer to look closely and piece together the stories held within the title itself.
